It’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month! Stay Protected with These Tips

It’s National Security Awareness Month

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Is your business protected?

October is the time to celebrate all things fall, from pumpkins to spiced lattes to the falling leaves. It’s also the time in which businesses should take some time to update their cybersecurity since October is also National Cyber Security Awareness Month. It is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. The internet touches almost all aspects of everyone’s daily life, whether we realize it or not.

Cybersecurity is especially important to your business. If data from your company was to fall into the wrong person’s hands, your business, employee’s identity, and vendor’s information would be highly compromised. One sure way to avoid an attack and lessen the impact of cyber liability is to implement these strategies.

Keep it Locked: Encourage your employees to change their password every month, and to select strong ones which cannot be predicted. Let’s face it, ‘Password123’ is not fooling anyone.

Safely Store Software: Never let employees download software that isn’t verified or is unlicensed. Make it a policy to confirm with the supervisor before downloading any new software on devices.

Know the Internet: Train your employees to avoid suspicious websites online. Avoid sites that have pop-ups and an unstable network at all costs.

Train Employees: Establish practices for changing passwords regularly (along with proper safeguarding of passwords), and learning how to spot phishing emails. If you allow employees to bring their own devices to work from, ensure that they know the proper security measures to be used for conducting business on their own devices.

Manage Documents: In the event of an employee’s computer becoming infected with a virus, employees should immediately report the incident to the IT team for investigation and action.

Private Data: Limit the number of employees who can access the company’s critical data by installing PINs, passcodes, and login information.

Along with proper training and security prevention, be sure to secure the right cyber liability insurance which can help to keep your business afloat and safe. For the policy that you need, contact Lloyd S. Berkett Insurance Agency. We serve Los Angeles, and surrounding cities in California!
